Early composition material was merely a chance in the mixture combined to make papier-mache. Sawdust was substitutede for paper, and the new material was called composition. The invention is attributed to Lazarus Reichman of New York City in 1877. It from improvements on this process that the modern composition dolls are made. Since several source books on composition dolls are now in the market.
Joseph Kallus made some of the early kewpies (1916) and formed the Cameo Doll Company in 1922 which continued producing Rose O`Neill Kewpies and Scootles.
E. I. Horsman, in business in 1865, is famous for the now-rare Billikens, Baby Bumps, Campbell Kids, HEbee-SHEbee, and others.
American Character Doll Company made several dolls in the 1920`s and 1930`s.
Madame Alexander Doll Company, founded in 1923, produced story book characters in 1930 and many personality dolls such as Princess Elizabeth, Mary Martin, Sonja Henie, Margareth O`Brien, Ann Shirley, and the Dionne Quintuplets.
Ideal Toy Corporation, founded in 1902, began production of dolls in 1934, and made one of the biggest sellers in doll history, the Shirley Temple doll.
